ASUS G53SX – 3D Magic With No Additional Glasses

ASUS G53SX is a 3D display laptop especially designed for gaming and entertainment. The laptop is part of the ROG series (Republic of Gamers). Its 15.6-inch full HD display can render stereoscopic 3D images without additional 3D glasses. This technology creates stereoscopic images using a screen with two overlapped LCD matrixes and a polarizing filter which is applied over the screen so as to reduce the viewing angle of the two images thus created.

Since the distance between the eyes is very short, of only a few centimeters, this means that the viewing angle from which both images can be seen in optimal conditions is also very limited. This limitation is overcome via a polarizing filter which can be dynamically adjusted with the help of a webcam integrated on the edge of the screen. This cam tracks the viewer’s position and people can move freely in front of the screen without diminishing the 3D effect.

Unfortunately, the display used in ASUS G53SX brings some limitations as well: the technology is compatible with graphics solutions provided by Nvidia only and 3D functionality is available for one person alone.

The hardware platform used by ASUS G53SX is based on the Intel HM65 Express chipset and a Core i7 2360QM processor from the Sandy Bridge series – a quad-core model set at a 2 GHz frequency (2.9 GHz once the Turbo Boost technology has been activated).

The graphics card is an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 M model, with a 2GB GDDR5 video memory. ASUS G53SX has a 16 GB memory made up of DDR3 modules set at 1333 MHz.

Data storage is ensured by a SSH device, consisting of a 500 GB hard disk able to generate 7200 RPM and a low NAND Flash memory which is used as a mean for storing most frequently accessed files as well as an intermediary storing place for data that will be transferred on the hard disk later. The NAND Flash memory transfers data faster than regular hard disks and acts as a buffer for the frequently-accessed data. It does not store data permanently. ASUS G53SX also has a second hard disk compartment and a DVD or Blu-ray writer.

The whole equipment is powered by an 8-cell Li-Ion accumulator which contributes to the total 3.83 kilo weight.
